 In this painting by artist John Dawson, members of a colony of wood ants (Formi ca sanguinea) tend to parasitic short-winged beetles (Lomechusa strumosa). At top, one of the ants is lured into feeding a beetle by irresistible scents the beetle has secreted onto its back. The ants feed their own larvae, oblivious to a beetle larva consuming an ant larva unhindered. The beetles can live only in ant nests, and occasionally eat their own larvae to prevent overpopulation of their species and the total elimination of their hosts. |
